Admission Procedure

Admission requirements

Requirements for admittance to the Main Program of the International Music College Freiburg are:

  • 1. completion of middle level training (German school system)
  • 2. or proof of completion of an equivalent preparatory program
  • 3. proof of the fulfillment of professional school requirements
  • 4. 35 years of age or younger
  • 5. for foreign applicants: a certificate of nationality and sufficient knowledge of German documented by the “ZD” (Zertifikat Deutsch). (Information is available worldwide though the Goethe-Institute: www.goethe.de).
  • 6. for under-age applicants: the written permission of parents or guardians
  • 7. the demonstration of specific artistic ability in the admission exam

Admission Procedure: Exceptional Cases

Applicants who cannot fulfill the relevant school prerequisites can, in exceptional cases, be admitted to the Main Program, if they show exceptional artistic talent and have an adequate and completed previous general education.

The test for exceptional artistic talent follows the these guidelines:

  • 1. The applicant must depict his/her artistic motives and personal goals in a written essay. A demo CD and at least two letters of recommendation from former music teachers, orchestra leaders, or the like, must also be submitted. The essay, demo CD, and the recommendations must be submitted along with the application for the entry exam.
  • 2. After a meeting with school advisors, the applicant then takes part in an ensuing entrance exam. A passing point total in the entrance exam is, by itself, not sufficient to insure acceptance into the Program. The exam committee alone determines whether or not the applicant is accepted on the grounds of exceptional artistic ability. The acceptance will be set down in writing. If the applicant is not accepted, this will be conveyed orally.

The possession of an “adequate general education” mentioned above can be confirmed, if:

  • 1. a grade transcript is submitted from a successfully completed secondary or vocational school,
  • 2. or an equivalent grade transcript is submitted. Applications will be turned down below a certain grade point average.

Audition application

One applies for entry into the Main Program of the IMCF by applying for the audition. Relevant forms are available in the school office.

The following should be included with the returned completed form:

  • 1. a bio in table form, with information about school history, professional activities, and particularly about musical development,
  • 2. an essay, in which the applicant describes his/her musical career goals and expectations of the training at IMCF,
  • 3. a certified copy of the fulfillment of the admission requirements,
  • 4. a certified copy of the final grades of the secondary school;
  • 5. a passport photo of the applicant,
  • 6. the filled-out and signed form “Anmeldung zur Audition,”
  • 7. proof of payment of the admission exam fee (95 €).

The school directors will evaluate the entrance application upon seeing the results of the audition.
